Today's track is "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Many will discuss "Free Bird" or "Sweet Home Alabama" or "Gimme Three Steps" as the greatest Skynyrd song, but for my money, "Simple Man" is not only the best Skynyrd song, but arguably the best Southern Rock song ever. So there.
I have also chosen to include covers by Shinedown and the Deftones. Why? It's a good song.
Enjoy.

Very glad to see you're back in the blogosphere and posting insightful and poignant comments that surely a dozen people will read.
On the Southern rock debate, I'll offer a few suggestions. Skynard has a firm grasp on the greatest southern rock anthems of all time (one could argue the Allman Brothers and Marshall Tucker Band are in the running) and I can proudly say I've been a loyal follower of the US Air Guitar Championship where audience members are encouraged to get on stage and "perform" a solo to Free Bird. But in terms of what gets the adrenaline flowing, vice a hot box session in a dingy basement during my sophomore year, I'm going with Black Betty by Ram Jam or Mississippi Queen by Mountain.
My Southern Rock Criteria
Is it a:
1: Locker Room Pump Up Jam
2: Party Song People Will Instantly Say, "Sweet tune" Upon Hearing
3: Road Trip Karaoke
4: Initiating Sexual Advance
5: Song Vietnam Veterans Will Have Flashbacks To
I will acquiesce the title to Mississippi Queen...
